Struggles of the Poor

The year 2020 was full of surprises, especially when covid-19 came. Covid-19 has wreaked havoc not just on our economy but also on our culture. People are enraged as a result of the harm caused by covid-19. People have lost loved ones, their health, and their jobs. Many of us are unable to attend classes or spend time with our friends. Everyone had issues as a result of covid-19. This pandemic affects the individuals around you as well. Covid-19 has also had a positive impact on our ecosystem. Many countries' air quality has improved, and ozone depletion in the northern hemisphere has mended and continues to heal.

COVID-19 has posed numerous challenges to our way of life. This has had such an impact that not everyone is able to find work as a result of the pandemic. Now, the number of COVID-19 cases is fast increasing, limitations are tightening, and the poor's life is becoming more difficult, such as finding a job and providing food for your family. The only option to survive is to rely on the government or seek assistance from the public and private sectors. However, even the government's efforts are insufficient to eradicate poverty in the country, thus these households rely on waste from the dump. A person can still feed his family in this manner, however, it may have negative consequences.

Some families rely on the garbage to provide something for their needs. Whatever they will find, as long as it is valuable, they take it to grab it. In the video that I saw, they grabbed a thrown Lechon head, a pack of expired coffee, and even let her child eat the thrown gummy worms. It saddens me that some children get to experience this kind of life. What struck me the most is that some families have to rely on food from the garbage, which can cause health problems. It might be trash to us, but it is gold for them. It is heartbreaking to witness these individuals eat rubbish, and it is even more difficult to watch them struggle. It also saddens me that at an early age, they have experienced this type of situation. It has taught me that if you are unhappy with what you have, consider those who do not have the same things you do and be grateful for what you have because not everyone can afford food on their table. It also made me realize that we need to band together and aid those in need, especially now that we are amidst a pandemic.

They are poor not because they do not work hard enough, but because they lack opportunities, and people look at them just because they look unclean and stinky. They have no choice but to rely on or seek assistance from the government to survive. But, because the governments' efforts are insufficient to eradicate poverty in the country, many families must rely on waste from dumpsters. Citizens require aid, and we must be there for them as a source of hope for them to continue living, since they, too, require opportunities in the same manner that affluent people do. We should lift each other’s spirits, and we should help each other because we should be treating each other as family and friends, not as enemies.

Where do you envision yourself if there is no covid-19 right now? What are your thoughts? If there is no covid-19 right now, I can see myself getting set to enjoy the sea of the Island Garden City of Samal, as well as spending valuable time with my peers. In the midst of COVID-19, we must stand up for ourselves and others around us. We must look at the positive side of things and take action to overcome this situation. As a citizen, I know in myself, I can contribute something to overcome this crisis that the world is facing right now.

As Amit Ray says, “In every crisis, doubt or confusion, take the higher path – the path of compassion, courage, understanding, and love.”
