Before home reserve Lee's version premiered, Yann Martel's blockbuster novel "Life of Pi," about a young man, a tiger, and God, was labeled "unfilmable." The Oscar-winning filmmaker successfully silenced critics by creating a picture that critics praised as a significant visual accomplishment.

The plot begins in Canada, with a young writer meeting PI Patel. The author has been persuaded that the life story of the PI would make a fantastic book topic. The following is a narrative of PI's life as told to the writer. PI's father refers to him as piscine Molitor Patel after the swimming pool in France.

To avoid the sound alike nicknamed pissing Patel, he adopts the name "hi" the Greek letter pi. He is raised in a Hindu family but is introduced to Christianity and then Islam at the age of 12 and decides to follow all three religions as he simply wants to love God. His mother supports his desire to grow, but his rationalist father tries to secularize him.

Pi's family runs a zoo, and he is attracted by the animals, notably Richard Parker, a Bengal tiger. When PI gets too near to Richard Parker, his father makes him watch the tiger murder a goat. Pi's father informs that they must migrate to Canada, where he intends to settle and sell the animals, when he is 16 years old.

The family books passage on a Japanese freighter with the animals during a storm the ship founders while pi is on deck he tries to find his family but a crewman throws him into a lifeboat a freed zebra jumps under the boat with him breaking its leg the ship sinks into the Mariana Trench drowning his family PI briefly sees what appears to be a survivor but it turns out to be Richard Parker after the storm PI awakens in Richard Parker emerges from behind the tarpaulin, killing the hyena before withdrawing to shelter for many days. He makes a tiny tether draft from flotation vests, to which he flees for protection from Richard Parker.

After hearing Pi's story, insurance agents are dissatisfied, but they leave without questioning PI further. The writer recognizes the parallels between the two stories, noting that in the second version, pious actually Richard Parker, PI says that it doesn't matter which story is true because his family died either way, and he then asks which story. The author favors and picks the first response to which PI responds, and so it goes with God. Glancing at a copy of the official Insurance report, the writer reads aloud that PI survived his wonderful experience in the company of an adult Bengal tiger.
