Dota: Dragon's Blood

Dota: Dragon's Blood is an animated epic fantasy streaming television series based on Dota 2 that follows the main protagonist Davion, more renowned in the game as Dragon Knight. The long-anticipated anime adaptation of the game wasn't really able to live up to its expectations to most players in the community. The main character, Dragon Knight, is the least exciting hero among 120 others to follow their lore into, but because he is one that has a more relatable subplot in the fiction makes him a good candidate to start the story with.

The series started as Davion gets to show off his hunting skills in front of a crowd as he fights a dynamic dragon. The action sequences are well-directed, even if Studio Mir's animation isn't quite smooth enough to keep up with some of the direction's tricks. But as we delve into the narrative of Davion, the story gets more complicated as plot after plot is given. If you are not quite experienced with the lore of the heroes in Dota, you wouldn't really be able to understand what's going on. Terrorblade, a powerful demon, shows up and kills the dragon Davion was fighting; A more powerful dragon, Slyrack, showed up to kill Terrorblade but failed and gave his powers to Davion for showing mercy; Mirana and Marci is on a quest to recover Selemene's lotuses. Yes even at 2 episodes in, a lot of plotlines showed up, but do not fret, you do not need to keep up with everything as the first season only tackles the intertwining story of how Davion searches for ways to kick out the Dragon within him and to retrieve the stolen lotuses.

Dragon's Blood is very comprehensible when it comes to Davion, Mirana, Marci but go out of that and it becomes confusing. We then move on to find Invoker, a powerful mage who’s kept himself alive through magic long enough to know nearly every kind of magic. If we follow the lore of the game, Invoker is the furthest from the original. We also get to see a glowing red stone that drives the zombies crazy which only lasts for half an episode but will most likely set up a plotline further down the series.

More importantly, even if Dragon's Blood was able to give justice to their items such as the Gem of True Sight and Town Portal scrolls, these are just not that unique in the fantasy genre. Races like elves, humans, dragons, etc. are just not that unique. The world of Castlevania and The Witcher offered more reasons on why their worlds are more engaging than others. Aside from all of that, Dragon's Blood is a pretty decent series. Even if it didn't really follow their lore in the game, I would still love to see the conclusion of their plotlines as every fantasy film out there that offers magics and stuff are good for me. Best hopes to the future seasons of the series.
