Critique Paper: Five Feet Apart

"Life's too short to waste a second"

-Stella Grant

Does love have boundaries? For instance, both of you are forced to stay a certain distance. Does it stop you from loving each other?

Five Feet Apart, A romantic drama film in 2019 that was inspired by Claire Wineland who suffered from cystic fibrosis. Cystic Fibrosis, a genetic condition that affects the lungs, digestive system, and other body organs severely. This was written by Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis and directed by Justin Baldoni.

Stella Grant tries to live a normal life and spends the majority of her time in the hospital since she had cystic fibrosis. Stella uses social media to cope with her illness such as making daily blogs; she also has ocd which makes her a meticulous person. She likes to be in control—organizing her meds cart, taking her pills on time. Yet, as time goes by she meets another CF patient named Will (William Newman), who's also at the hospital for the medication trial but both of them are opposite, where Stella cherishes every moment, every breath while Will is rebellious that he can not wait for his last breath. However, everyone seems to agree that opposites attract; as they both began to understand each other, expectedly they fell in love. CF patients need to control most by keeping themselves away from anyone or anything that might pass along an infection and jeopardize the possibility of a lung transplant. Six feet apart. No exceptions.

At this point, the desire to throw the rules out the window and embrace their attraction grows as their connection grows stronger. The love between them is put to test; love isn't always rainbows and butterflies especially when they are being restricted to have physical contact for their own safety.

This movie is wonderful and heartwarming; it is quite predictable but that doesn't stop the movie from being great. This film shows how two people can love even with boundaries, despite the challenges and struggles due to their illness; everything always works out. Stella Grant once said, "if there's a will there's a way." Why would you stop loving the person you love just because you are being forced to stay a certain distance? Moreover, this movie proves that distance brings two people emotionally closer to one another.

Aside from the love story, this movie also indicates awareness for cystic fibrosis patients of how dangerous it is to take such risks. Personally speaking, I wouldn't know about cystic fibrosis if I hadn't watched the film. This film gives a lot of knowledge to people who do not have any idea about the illness.

According to Stella Grant, “It’s just life Will. It’ll be over before we know it.” It is also an eye-opener to everyone which reminds us that simple things we all take for granted everyday are not available to everyone. In other words, we shall live life to the fullest, because we never know what might happen tomorrow.

Don’t think about what you’ve lost. Think of how much you have to gain. - Will
